Shenandoah Valley Scholars’ Latino Initiative (SVSLI) is a program for Hispanic scholars in the region that provides mentorships and monetary assistance to allow children to partake in receiving a higher education. The Scholars’ Latino Initiative was founded in 2003 by Peter Kaufman at UNC-Chapel Hill, and in Spring 2012 the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, began its own SLI. Currently we are partnering with colleges such as Eastern Mennonite University and have selected 3 scholars.
This blog has two primary functions. One is to provide information to you (the reader) about SVSLI’s activities and information on the scholarship program as well as Latino education in general. The second function is to allow you to see what goes on in a start-up non-profit organization through the eyes of the Madison Consulting Group. The MCG is a group of students based out of James Madison University who are partnering with SVSLI. This is a service-learning opportunity to both support SVSLI and learn from SVSLI about communication within organizations as well as problems within the greater Harrisonburg/Shenandoah Valley community.
